State Library talk to focus on Mary Joyce

Southeast Alaska adventurer and entrepreneur Mary Joyce will be the focus of a noontime presentation by Mary Lou Gerbi next Wednesday, March 13, at the Alaska State Library Historical Collections. The talk is free and open to the public.

Music for the Millennium: Local violinist Linda Rosenthal has won a grant for Juneau to host a guest composer this fall. Part of a national millennium project, the composer will write a piece of music inspired by the natural beauty of Juneau and celebrating the coming millennium.

Cohen heard the singer, harmonica player and slide guitarist playing in Seattle with his band, the Hawks. When Cohen took on the job of administrator for the Juneau Jazz and Classics festival last year, he pitched the band to festival director and founder Linda Rosenthal. ``Linda liked them too.

The four members of the a cappella group The Trenchcoats watched in dismay last May as dozens of their summer gigs were suddenly canceled. The band performed in Juneau in May 1998, and the singers are back in town Saturday night for a benefit concert at Centennial Hall as The Coats.

Meet the composers event to be held Monday

The Juneau-Douglas City Museum will host a special Jazz & Classics presentation, Meet the Composers, from 7-8:30 p.m. on Monday, May 16. Meet the Composers will feature Claire Daly and Steve Hudson, who will discuss the upcoming world premiere of their work, "The Mary Joyce Project: Nothing to Lose."
