Symphony review: A scoreless winner

Am I to believe that Troy Quinn, who started singing as a choir boy at age six, now, at age 31, conducts orchestras while singing professionally? Well, it's true in spite of the widespread belief that singers have resonance where others have brains.

Pickett, orchestra fare well in weekend concert

What have we done to deserve a conductor such as Kyle Wylie Pickett in our midst? Under his direction over the past 14 years, the Juneau Symphony Orchestra has performed compositions which one would not expect a small-town orchestra to be capable of playing. When beginning to rehearse such a major work, Dr. Pickett often has asked himself, "What have I done?!" Yet, he says, it always has worked out. He refers to such success as "The Juneau Miracle".

...Remember in those old movies when a motorist turns his head to the passenger and yaks away for a couple of miles? John d'Armand can't stand that. "I can't even hear what they're saying. I want to say, 'Look at the road!' " said d'Armand...
