UAS miner training program prompted by industry demand

"Introduction to Mining Occupations and Operatings" students had an opportunity to see a mine firsthand in March, when the Southeast Alaska cohort of the University of Alaska Southeast class for high school seniors toured the Coeur Alaska Kensington Gold Mine.

The mining industry in Southeast Alaska has taken off in recent years. And as mining has grown as a sector of the local, regional and state economy, the University of Alaska Southeast has embarked on a mission to meet the demand for new mine workers.

Mines aim to keep workers happy, reduce turnover

Employee turnover has been a significant problem that has hurt productivity at Alaska's producing underground mines, companies operating the mines reported at the Alaska Miners Association convention Nov. 6.
Hecla donates $300K to UAS for mining training program

Hecla Greens Creek Mining Co. made its biggest single donation ever Thursday before the Juneau Chamber of Commerce. The mine gifted $300,000 to the University of Alaska Foundation to support a local vocational outreach and training program for the mining industry. The donation will fund a special career development program for mining at the University of Alaska Southeast. It will aid students in preparing for mining industry jobs through education, job shadowing and training.
