JUNEAU -- The state Legislature may not require health officials to deny funding for abortions for poor women whose health may be at risk, the Alaska Supreme Court ruled on Friday.
No matter what doctors and judges might say, key Republican legislators say there are some abortions they won't pay for.
Under the Hyde Amendment, named for Illinois Republican congressman Henry Hyde, federal law permits Medicaid funding for abortions for low-income women in cases of rape and incest, or when the mother's life is at stake.
