Rietze served for 20 years as director of the Alaska Region of the National Marine Fisheries Service and its predecessor agency, the U.S. Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. He was born May 20, 1920, in Agatha, Idaho, and moved to Camus, Wash., where his father worked at the paper mill.
