Alaska village pulls out of lawsuit that stalled drilling

ANCHORAGE - The Native Village of Point Hope, a tribal government that has for years been a staunch opponent of Arctic offshore oil development, is withdrawing from a lawsuit that sought to block or overturn a 2008 lease sale.The village was the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit that claimed the U.S. Mineral Management Service had conducted a flawed environmental analysis before the sale in the Chukchi Sea, the Alaska Dispatch News reported.

Chain saw, knife fight leads to injuries in Alaska village

ANCHORAGE - Alaska State Troopers say a man was seriously injured in a fight with a woman that involved a knife and a non-operating chain saw but they're not sure who was holding which weapon.Police say both were intoxicated March 11 when the fight started in Emmonak (ee-MON'-ak), a village of 840 people northwest of Bethel.Anchorage television station KTUU (http://bit.ly/1BRnsSM) reports troopers responding to the home of a 52-year-old man found him bleeding from multiple wounds.

ANCHORAGE - Ruby Kaleak's (KAL-ee-ak's) part-time job is keeping polar bears away from people in a village on Alaska's Beaufort (BOH'-fort) Sea coast, so she was prepared when one of the biggest bears she's ever seen got inside a house.Kaleak tells the Alaska Dispatch News reported that she got a call by radio on Friday that a bear was inside a doorway.She and a co-worker spotted the polar bear inside 81-year-old Betty Brower's home in Kaktovik (kak-TOH'-vik), a village of 300.
