Subsea mountains harbor strange life

Off the coast of Alaska, giant spider crabs 7 feet across crawl between submerged mountains the size of Mount Fairweather. In a few weeks, Juneau scientist Tom Shirley will be taking a tiny submarine and diving as deep as 15,000 feet below the surface of the Gulf of Alaska, part of an ocean exploration project studying a range of undersea mountains and the strange life forms that inhabit them.

Committee OKs $21 million for federal fisheries center

The U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee this month approved $21 million for the Lena Point fisheries center - the last chunk of money needed to fund construction of the $50 million federal complex. The $21 million appropriation still needs approval by the full Senate and the House, which has approved $5.8 million for the project.

Empire editorial: Vote yes for Proposition C

Proposition C, the $236 million general obligation education funding bond goes before voters on Nov. 5. The bond package applies $170 million toward the $650 million in backlogged rural school projects throughout Alaska. Proposition C also provides $61 million for University of Alaska classroom and facility projects throughout the state and $5 million for the Anchorage Museum.
